The IPL match
Bustling through the harried crowds and sweating profusely we finally made our way to the stadium to watch the IPL cricket match between the Deccan Chargers and the Mumbai Indians. This was the first experience for me as far as watching a live cricket match was concerned. I was not particularly enthused with the idea of going for this match which will come as a surprise to many but I was more interested in attending to matters of spirituality. I had to cancel a class on a wonderful meditation course, something my heart has been yearning for, because it coincided with the match, but pray, my husband was not going to let me miss the once in a lifetime opportunity of seeing a live cricket match. So the first lesson I taught myself, even more I could embark on the spirituality course, was to sacrifice something for your loved ones! I decided to go for the match.
The stadium was big enough just like any other in our country and suffice is to say one of the dirtiest too! Things were hopelessly littered but where else could people really dispose off the garbage, because there were no trash cans in sight. Now who could believe that a stadium packed to its capacity will not cater to something as trite albeit important as a few trash cans. But no, who cares! I took a few deep breaths ( I should have gone for the meditation course) to calm myself and just decided to do what best I can do to manage the litter at least around myself, and my family included.
Finally the famous players paraded out onto the field and I forgot about my worries for a while ( didn’t I mention the gross uncleanliness around?). We were seated not too far from the players infact we were right behind the cheer leaders ‘ stage sans the cheerleaders , thank god! I was not in the mood to enjoy some gorgeous women shake their booties right in front of me, though I am sure all the men there would have thought of that as an added bonus to the money spent on the tickets. Once the game started I was surprised to find myself cheering and enjoying with the thousands sitting there. The enthusiasm was infectious. No wonder they say that a game and especially in this case cricket which has universal appeal, transcends all barriers and brings us all together. Crowds were screaming when Ishant Sharma , Pollard, Gony, and the God of cricket Sachin Tendulkar were right in front of us when fielding. Finally I get to see the Sachin live in flesh and blood and the feeling was awesome though he could have come closer to us on the field the way the above mentioned players did but I should be contented with whatever I get ( meditation, here I come!).
I cannot express how I felt that evening, but it was really worth all the trouble we went through to get there in the first place. I am sure I would have said the same thing about my meditation course!
Mumbai Indians won much to the chagrin of the locals most of whom obviously support the local team Deccan Chargers. As for me, I really never went there to support any particular team, but just for the fun factor. I felt a tad bit bad for Sangakkara, the captain of the DC team , first the loss of the world cup and now the IPL match against Mumbai Indians. Year 2011 has definitely not been too kind to him but he has maintained such equanimity that it is really creditable. I think I support the DC team!
